How Insect Catching Works in Heartopia

Insect catching in Heartopia is a peaceful exploration hobby centered around discovering, observing, and collecting various bugs found throughout the world. Unlike net-based minigames in other titles, Heartopia uses a Bubble Wand mechanic to gently encapsulate insects, making it a hobby of timing, awareness, and environmental knowledge.

Insects contribute to your collection log, can be displayed or sold, and play into hobby progression and decoration systems.

Unlocking the Insect Catching Hobby

Hobby Requirement

To unlock Insect Catching, you must reach Developer (DG) Level 6.

Once you have the level requirement, you will receive a Hobby Expansion Ticket as a progression reward.

Bring the ticket to Naniwa, the NPC who oversees the insect hobby, and complete her introductory quest to activate Insect Catching permanently.

This process mirrors other lifestyle activities in Heartopia, where hobby unlocks are tied to DG progression. Insect Catching does not become available before DG Level 6.

The Gear: Bubble Wand

Upon activating the hobby:

  • You receive a Bubble Wand — the primary tool for catching insects.
  • Equip the Bubble Wand through your Toolbox inventory.
  • When used, the Bubble Wand projects a gentle bubble that can encapsulate insects if timed properly.

Unlike fishing rods or gardening tools, the Bubble Wand typically does not have durability but may be enhanced through hobby upgrades or cosmetics. You can also obtain Skin Variants or Style Wands via hobby rewards or crafting.

Capture Techniques

Tap vs Charged Cast

Two main capture styles:

  • Quick Tap: Best for insects that move slowly or hover within close range.
  • Charged Cast: Hold the button to extend range and travel distance. Especially useful for butterflies, dragonflies, and other airborne insects.

Since bubbles travel at a fixed speed, you must lead your shot — aim where the insect will be, not where it is at the moment of casting.

Stealth & Approach

Insect behavior is sensitive:

  • Fast or high-rarity insects will flee if approached too quickly.
  • Moving at full sprint near insect hotspots often causes them to vanish.
  • Walking or crouching when you see alert indicators increases success rate.

Certain insects are easily startled and require a patient approach.

Progression & Insect Rarity

Insect variety and spawn rates expand as your Insect Catching hobby level increases:

  • Level 1–3: Common insects (low-rarity species)
  • Level 4–5: Mid-rarity insects become more frequent
  • Level 6+: High-rarity species (including rare butterflies and beetles) appear

While there is not a strict published star gating system from the developers, hobby-based unlocks and spawn chances clearly correlate with level progression.

Environmental Influence

Weather & Time

Insects have specific conditions that influence spawn patterns:

  • Sunny weather is good for general insect activity.
  • Rainy weather does not prevent insects but may shift which species are active.
  • Rainbow weather often coincides with increased appearances of rare insects.

Time of day also matters: some insects are more active in morning hours, or during dusk or evening light. These patterns are trends rather than fixed schedules.

Biomes & Spots

Different environments have different insect populations:

  • Forest areas: beetles, cicadas, stag beetles
  • Meadows / Flower fields: butterflies, skippers
  • Near water: dragonflies, damselflies
  • Grasslands / Hills: rare longhorn beetles

Use the table and filters on this page to match locations and conditions.

Insect Catching FAQ

Where do rare insects spawn?

Rare species (e.g., Blue Morpho or Alpine Longhorn Beetle) are often tied to specific biomes and may be more frequent under Rainbow or transitional weather events. There is no official “rainbow only” table — think of it as spawn weighting rather than a strict requirement. Check your Weather app or environmental indicators to time your hunting runs.

How can I improve my capture success?

Use Charged Casts for airborne or fast insects. Approach slowly — tolerance to player movement increases with hobby level. Aim slightly ahead of fast insects when casting so the bubble encompasses their future position.

What can I do with insects after capture?

Register them in your Collection Log (hobby XP and registry completion), display them in Insect Cases or Show Specimens at home, sell them for Gold (rarer insects fetch higher prices), or use them for decoration or some hobby-linked crafting (varies by update).

Do insects disappear if I miss a shot?

Most will remain for at least one more attempt, but high-rarity insects may react quickly and move away if you linger or chase too long. Waiting a moment after missing can give the insect a chance to settle again.
